Industrial application of neutron stress measurement in Japan

Saito, Toru; Hayashi, Makoto*; Kobayashi, Shinsho*; Morii, Yukio

no journal, ,

Recently, each industry is searching for the most suitable manufacturing process to reduce the cost. Especially, the production method of material, the improvement of processing technique, and the selection of cheap materials are being discussed. Therefore, it is the top-priority issue to examine safety and reliability of the material strength to reexamine these. In the industrial user, residual stress has been evaluated by the X-ray stress measurement or by the finite element method (FEM) etc. Neutron is the only one probe to measure the lattice strain nondestructively at the deep inside of materials. The promotion program of technology transfer on neutron application has been implementing in Japan since 2006. The experiments executed in this program are the residual stress evaluation in the welded boiler tube, carburized steel, and welded sample that imitates the stress measurement in the large structure etc. Some experimental results obtained in the program will be presented at this conference.

Quantitative evaluations of microstructural factors by neutron diffraction for cold rolled austenitic stainless steels

Suzuki, Hiroshi

no journal, ,

Cold rolled stainless steels show anisotropic mechanical properties which are dependent on texture, substructure (dislocation structure and density) and intergranular stresses and hence it is expected to determine these microstructural factors as macroscopically averaged values. Neutron diffraction enables us to measure these values for cm-ordered bulky specimens. In this study, texture measurements and profile analysis were simultaneously performed to determine the above microstructural factors by an angler dispersion neutron diffraction method for two stainless steels.
